Rest as Worship: Am I a Blowfish?

Yesterday was a fantastic day!  We spent the day on Ocracoke Island, the sun was shining, and we caught a bunch of fish… what could be better?

Yesterday I wrote a little bit about why surf fishing is good for me, today I want to talk a little bit about what the Blowfish I caught yesterday has had me thinking about.

The blowfish a goofy looking fish, with big buck teeth, and an overall appearance that reminds me of Angry Birds.  What makes the blowfish unique is that when it feels threatened, it has the ability to puff itself up two or three times its size to make itself appear threatening to those who are intimidating it.

As I was enjoying the day, my mind was pondering the question “am I a blowfish?”  It is not the type of question that we like to ask ourselves… but it is something that we must ask.  When I feel threatened or intimidated do I puff myself up?  When surrounded by people who I feel inferior to, do I throw up my defenses?  How many times through the course of my day do I blow myself up and put on an image that says “I’m tougher than you?”

The blowfish’s defense mechanism is pretty flimsy.  If you puncture its outer skin, it deflates rather quickly leaving it pretty much helpless to defend itself.

I think it works the same way for me.
