Jesus, the N-Word, and the Sexuality Debate

A recent post from Sammy Adebiyi had me on the verge of tears. In it, he talks about how he moved beyond theological debates to loving people that Jesus loves. Sammy says:

I cried because for the first time in my life, I wanted gay people to know Jesus loved them more than I wanted them to know my theological position.

This afternoon, Todd and I talk about Sammy’s experience, and what the church can learn about the most significant cultural issue facing the church today.

Overall I like your thoughts. However, one thing I didn’t like, although it’s understandable, is that you were quite ambiguous in talking about what you meant by “homosexuality.” That word is often used to refer to the experience of romantic and/or sexual attraction to the same sex, which I don’t believe is something to be categorized morally. It is a person’s response (also confusingly itself often referred to as “homosexuality”) that he or she is morally responsible for. I believe that someone can be held responsible for homosexual attraction only in the same senses that you can be held responsible for attraction to women other than your wife.

An excellent post that makes a point related to what you were discussing: http://gaysubtlety.wordpress.com/2012/11/19/what-is-love/
