John Piper on Exploding From Within

Driving up to Albany on Saturday I was listening to the Catalyst Podcast.  John Piper was the guest on this episode, and he seemed to have an obsession with explosions.

When asked about his latest book, Bloodlines, he spoke of how he had no choice but to write the book since it was exploding from deep within him. At first I thought it was an odd way of describing things, but strangely accurate.  What struck me was the next time that he used the phrase. While describing the need for church leaders to be grounded in scripture, the phrase popped up again.  Piper described how important it is for our preaching to be the explosion of all that the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives through our soaking in scripture.

Think about that for a minute (or a couple of days).

With all the discussion of vision, strategies, systems, and programs (all of which ARE important), it can be easy to lose sight of that which should be stirring our heart the most deeply: the Word of God.  If our study of scripture is having a deep impact in our lives, we will have no choice but to allow it to explode out of us in our preaching, our conversation, and in the way we are living our lives.  As we head into this Christmas season, my prayer is that the work of the Holy Spirit is exploding throughout all of us, and the passion with which we communicate our love for Christ and the Word of God can’t help but cause exploding congregations in each of our churches.

What is the Holy Spirit causing to explode out of YOU?
