Eating a Cockroach for Jesus

Through the years, we’ve seen (and pulled off) a bunch of crazy stunts aimed at drawing a crowd to a ministry event. A Miami pastor is attempting to do just that, by promising to eat a cockroach on stage if enough people attend a weeknight college group meeting. Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr. has a history of engaging in these kinds of stunts through the years… going so far as getting tazered on stage at one event.

So, here is our question: this is nothing new, there has always been someone willing to do the sensational in order to draw a crowd that they can preach to, is this a good thing?

Would YOU do something like this in YOUR church?

So having just preached on 1 Cor 9:19-27 and Paul’s explaining that he was willing to change his approach to ministry to meet the audience he was appealing to, I wonder if he would have eaten a cockroach? And I believe the answer is yes, but it is a qualified yes.

I think that if the people Paul was trying to reach were into eating cockroaches, that it was an important part of their traditions and culture, he would have put aside his personal gag reflex and eaten them. If Paul was reaching a biker community, I envision he would have learned how to ride a Harley. But in this Florida example, my guess is that this was not the weekly gathering of the Cockroach Eating College Students Society of South Florida, so I don’t envision Paul coming up with this idea.

So, I think I am with Matt on this one. I would be interested to hear the pastor’s transition from eating that bug into, “The kingdom of heaven is like eating a cockroach…”
