Conversations: Rick McKinley

This Beautiful MessLet’s get something straight right from the start: this post might give the impression that I have a man crush on Rick McKinleyI do.

Now that we have dealt with the obvious, let’s talk a little bit about the conversation that Todd and I recently had with Rick. Twelve years ago, Rick McKinley and a small group of people set out to plant a church in one of the most unchurched cities in America: Portland, Oregon. Since that time, Imago Dei has grown as a church, and in the influence it has on the city of Portland.

While our conversation was supposed to be about Rick’s recently re-released book This Beautiful Mess: Practicing the Presence of the Kingdom of God, the conversation went all over the place, and is one of my most favorite conversations so far. The book is essentially a reminder that we are called to expand the Kingdom, not the church. During our conversation, Rick reminds us that if we focus on the church, we may or may not get the Kingdom… but if we focus on the Kingdom, we always get the church.

So here is why I loved this interview: over the course of twenty minutes, we got to hear Rick’s heart for the Kingdom, why he is optimistic about the church moving forward, the backstory behind the movements taking place in Portland (and shared in the New York Times), and how they make this coalition work. The conversation is a little longer than most of the ones we have done, but it is well worth the time investment.
