New Church for Mark Driscoll

Phoenix Road Sign with dramatic blue sky and clouds - U.S. State Capitals Series.

News of Mark Driscoll’s reemergence in ministry from Ministry Briefing this week: The most significant point in Mark Driscoll’s bio at his new church plant in Phoenix, AZ is missing: his role as pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle. Driscoll also included two former pastors from Mars Hill who have also scrubbed their bios of any mention of their previous positions at Mars Hill. The church, which is called Trinity Church, is backed by a board […]

The Media has Recognized Evangelicals Don’t Vote as a Block

checklist

More political news from Ministry Briefing this week: While evangelicals tend to be divided among Trump, Cruz, and Rubio in the 2016 presidential election, CNN recognizes that evangelicals are anything but a united voting block. They identify millennial, cultural, and progressive elements along with key leaders for each segment of evangelical voters. Source: CNN Why does this matter for church leaders? It seems that there is finally an acknowledgement that the evangelical world is not a unified voting block. […]

Drunk Employees are More Effective than Sleep Deprived Employees

sleep

This week’s Ministry Briefing shares research on the importance of getting enough sleep: Staying up late to finish a project has significant diminishing returns in the days to come. How significant? A new student out of the University of Rochester found that sleep deprived employees struggled to perform on the same level as those who were intoxicated. Sleep deprivation is bad for your mood, your ability to focus, and your access to higher level brain functions. In […]

Jerry Falwell Jr. & Donald Trump

Donald Trump

One of the biggest political stories in Ministry Briefing this week: Comparing the act to his father’s endorsement of Ronald Reagan, Jerry Falwell Jr. announced that he was formally endorsing Donald Trump for President, even going as far as saying that Trump represents Jesus and that Trump would be a strong president. Falwell was immediately questioned for other evangelical leaders, especially since Trump had shared in an interview that he has never had to ask God for forgiveness. […]

audience watching theater play

This Ministry Briefing story surprised me: While much continues to be written about megachurches, which average 2,000 attendees or more, mid-sized churches with attendance between 500 and 1,799 make up 40% of all Protestant Churches in America. They tend to be younger, with two thirds of their attendees under the age of 50, and more diverse, with one third of these churches qualifying as bi-racial. Those that are multisite tend to grow the fastest. Source: Leadership Network […]

How Mega-Churches are both Shrinking and Growing

A group of young women bow their heads and pray with bibles.

In Ministry Briefing this week we highlighted some of the latest research on mega-churches: A new report found North American megachurches are scaling down their sizes and thinking in smaller units. Seating in megachurches is averaging around 1200 seats rather than the average of 1500 from five years ago. In addition, 79% of megachurches invest significant time in small groups. Talking About Pastoral Succession

cathedral

This week’s Ministry Briefing has a cool story on successful pastoral succession: In a series of interviews, pastors share how they have stepped out of their ministry leadership roles and appointed successors. In some cases the pastors moved onto another ministry role outside church leadership, while others moved into a leadership development role that still left the new pastor to lead without interference. Source: Christianity Today Why does this matter for church leaders? I am convinced that this […]

IMB Cuts More Jobs as Financial Struggles Continue

question mark

From this week’s Ministry Briefing, more financial struggles for the International Mission Board: The cuts for the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board (IMB) continue to take effect as the IMB has closed a communications office in Virginia, eliminating 30 jobs and transferring 10 other positions. This is part of a move to get the financially troubled organization out of the red–a move that will eliminate between 600 and 800 positions. Source: Christian Today Why does […]

break bread

A cool story from this week’s Ministry Briefing about a remarkable gift to Eagle Brook Church: With 22,000 in worship each weekend at it’s 6 locations, Eagle Brook Church is already Minnesota’s largest church, who knows what they can do with a new 17 million dollar gift from a single donor? Pastor Bob Merritt, who could not be reached for comment, has hinted that it will go to pay off the mortgages on some of their […]
